Ive never developed a leader. And so I had all these things, fundamental statements like, we work hard or, we dont whine, basically all the principles to try to create this great culture. These have been developed over the years. But the thing I learned most from him was how he would calmly sit there and listen to, you know, aggressive self-righteousness and not indict the person with his self-righteous opinion. Im sorry, but I completely disagree with what youre saying. And he would be very patient and he wouldnt debate them and he would just nod and let them finish. And this person would ask him questions. I mean, I thought I could play for anyone. To paraphrase Alex Ferguson of Man United fame, We want to take responsibility for our own action, our own errors, our own performance level, and eventually for every result.. And theyre all forced to memorize this, The true joy in life is to be a force of fortune instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy. So any time we catch anyone whining in our program theyre forced to recite that. Part of that is hiring more coaches to do that. Im awestruck with the power of this tool. Basically these human wrecks, because the parents have absolutely spoiled them. You know, shes a great athlete and shell kick everyones ass on the field, but outside the field shes a royal pain in the ass. But basically thats one of many failed experiments that Ive done with my leaders. Paraphrase, and obviously were bringing in our culture. So I think, yeah, business can save the world. Coach Dorrance: I just finished reading a book and Im going to recommend it to all of your listeners right now. They leave to shower immediately. [Laughs.]. The top 10 are basically starters, the top 16 basically playing every game.The top five end up signing pro contracts. But through this love, love of family, love of neighborhood, love of community, love of the people that work for you and the people you serve, the customers, because hes also a free enterprise, this unbelievable man, Arthur Blank is. And then he patiently waits for, you know, this self-righteous CEO to finish and then he basically calmly says, well, if youd taken that energy that you invested in your bottom performer and you invested that in your top performers, your bottom line would be better. That 10 year lawsuit was a part of it, but also Jack Welch, one of the great business people of all time, convinced me of this as well. Our primary mission is to develop the character of the young women that were training. But if this persons going to be toxic to your culture and is going to be so incredibly selfish, thats not the person to hire.
